Honda with a Corona-era car ad that doesn't suck

Everyone means well. I think. Maybe?

What’s inarguable is that “Corona-era” advertising is starting to blend together. Similar formula. Familiar scripts. All the “money” words. It doesn’t matter the brand, and it’s happening to a comical degree, as captured beautifully by YouTuber Microsoft Sam:

Car companies (as shown) are among the sheep. What I find worse? The other spots from OEMs and dealerships relentlessly espousing how “there for us” they are “during this time.” I’m fairly certain the folks coming up near or at the bottom of my list of go-to’s in a crisis featuring profound social, cultural and economic implications would be…car dealers.

Which all takes us to Honda. Here’s their latest, and it could be my favorite car spot to date.

From the music to the message to the creative, this one just makes me smile. It stirs your imagination a bit. It makes you pause. It offers just a touch of winking-at-you cleverness. #StayHome message is the only intended takeaway. It was if they said, “you know what…nobody gives a crap about buying a car or even how [insert car company] is trying to save their neighbors and the world…let’s just have some fun with what we got…maybe someone will remember once this all blows over.”

Does it fit the brand, though? Honda’s tagline: “The Power of Dreams.”

Well played, team. Until we drive again.
